It feels like we are entering a new era when it comes to laptops in 2022. Apple’s releases over the past few years have included their M1 Chip, which promises more power and potential than ever before. The presence of this kind of hardware in a laptop facilitates future development, giving developers of games and other software much more to work with.
Of course, a great laptop does not come cheap. When I splashed out on my new Macbook Pro, I became slightly obsessive. The chance that my laptop would be destroyed or stolen – leaving me a couple thousand dollars light and without my precious new purchase – seemed too high.
It made me really think about the importance of keeping my laptop safe, even though I’m the kind of person who happily leaves my devices under the watch of a stranger in a public coffee shop while I get a refill. The bad news is that there is no way to guarantee that your new laptop stays safe. The good news is that you can take significant measures to prevent destruction and theft, as well as to mitigate the blow.
Take the following steps to keep your laptop safe in 2022.
Get Good Insurance
There is only one way to truly mitigate the financial pain of losing a laptop. Insurance gives you the peace of mind that, after paying a small deductible, you will be able to get a replacement. However, it also means another monthly bill to add to the already high cost of living.
But laptop insurance does not need to be expensive. In fact, your renters or homeowners insurance may already include laptop coverage. This is because renters and homeowners insurance includes your possessions, whether they are in your home or somewhere else.
Different policies have different exclusions, and your laptop may not be automatically covered. However, you can add your laptop, as well as your other devices, for a relatively small additional fee.
Lock Your Bag
Putting a lock on your laptop bag is a good way to prevent theft. The fact is that a lock will not stop someone once they have your bag in their possession. However, it does stop them from easily removing your laptop from your backpack while you remain blissfully unaware.
A simple code lock is good enough. The goal isn’t to make it impossible to open your backpack – a thief can simply cut into it – but to make it impossible to do so without a physical confrontation. Most thieves are looking for easy targets, and will only go for opportunities that seem very low risk.
Use a Strong Password
I’ve been unlocking my laptop with my fingerprint for years and hardly ever have to input my password. But that hasn’t stopped me from using a laughably simple password. That’s now changed, as a good password can ensure you get your laptop back when it has been stolen.
A laptop that is easily unlocked is going to be hard to trace. This is because the thief will turn off location tracking as soon as possible. And while any savvy thief understands the risk of being tracked, they’d rather take the chance of getting into your laptop than immediately resetting it entirely.
This is because laptops today have good anti-theft software. It is very difficult to use a stolen laptop if you don’t have a password. There are, of course, ways to get in, but they take time and that time could be your window to find your laptop while you still can.
This may seem like a long shot to you, but it at least ensures you have a chance. Tracking software is better than ever. Using a strong password is unlikely to bother you all that much, considering the likelihood that you are using biometric methods to open your laptop, so make the effort to put one in place.
Laptops can get stolen or damaged no matter how careful you are. Be sure to use the above tips to keep your laptop as safe as possible, and get the right insurance to mitigate any losses.
